Specify printer list (ADMX)

=== Setting Instructions ===

In the device URI column, put a | and then the modelname to specify a modelname for the drivers that you want the specific printer to utilize.

Example: deviceURI|HP Photosmart C6100 series. Fax

=== Setting Details ===

Enable this group policy to configure printing settings.

NOTE: This deprecated group policy does not provide support for specific printer drivers. However, the values set in this group policy will affect the values in the superseding group policy "Specify printer list (with model)."

You can set up a managed printer list so that users have a specific set of network printers available when they print. Printers specified in this policy will use generic PostScript driver.

The list of printers available to the user is a combination of managed printers and any printers that are added to printer list on the user's computer. You can restrict the printer list to only show managed printers.

Printers added using AppleTalk are not supported for client computers running Mac OS X v10.6.

To create a printer list for users, click "Add..." button. You need to specify printer's Name and DeviceURI for each printer. Make sure the DeviceURI is entered correctly.

Examples:

Add a HP laserjet printer at address 192.168.0.20:9100:
socket://192.168.0.20:9100

Add a Windows printer via Centrify DirectControl Agent:
cdcsmb://myserver.mycompany.com/PrinterName

- Allow user to modify the printer list (Not available in OS X v10.5):
Deselect this option to prevent users from modifying the printer list.

- Allow printers that connect directly to the user's computer:
Deselect this option to prevent users from using local printers.

- Require an administrator password:
Select this option to require an administrator password to use local printers. This option takes effect only if "Allow printers that connect directly to the user's computer" is checked.

To add security for activating "Allow printers that connect directly to user's computer", it is recommended to select this option as well, which enforce requiring an administrator password in order to print to a printer that is connected directly.

- Only show managed printers (Mac OS X v10.5.7 or later):
Select this option to restrict the printer list to only show managed printers.

Once enabled, this group policy takes effect when users log out and back in.

=== DeviceURI ===

The DeviceURI (Uniform Resource Identifiers) specifies the device that is assigned to the printer. Below are some of the possible DeviceURI types and examples.

- Jetdirect:
socket://ip-address-or-hostname
socket://ip-address-or-hostname:port-number

- Internet Printing Protocol:
ipp://ip-address-or-hostname/resource
ipp://ip-address-or-hostname:port-number/resource

- Internet Printing Protocol (http):
http://ip-address-or-hostname:port-number/resource

- LPD/LPR Host or Printer:
lpd://ip-address-or-hostname/queue
lpd://username@ip-address-or-hostname/queue

- Windows Printer via Centrify DirectControl Agent:
cdcsmb://server_fqdn/printersharename

- Windows:
smb://workgroup/server/printersharename
smb://ip-address-or-hostname/printersharename
smb://username:password@workgroup/ip-address-or-hostname/printersharename
smb://username:password@ip-address-or-hostname/printersharename
